Neighborhood Based Foster Care
You can make a difference!
In cooperation with the counties we serve, Families For Children is implementing the idea of "Neighborhood Based Foster Care" into our foster care program.
Key components of this program include:
- Increasing the proportion of children who are in foster care to be placed with foster families in their own neighborhoods and communities.
- Reducing the number of placement moves children in foster care experience.
- Continutity of education and services for foster children.
- Building stronger communities.
The core principle behind Neighborhood Based Foster Care is neighbors caring for others within their communities. The advantages to the children placed in foster care are numerous. Significantly, children will feel more comfortable in the familiar surroundings of their own community and will experience less disruption in their daily lives by remaining in their current school and maintaining peer and extended family relationships that may be nearby.
Neighborhood Based Foster Care can have positive effects for Foster Parents as well. Medical, dental counseling or other appointments will be closer to your home. Also, there will often be fewer behavioral issues when children experience less disruption in their surroundings leading to a win-win situation for both Foster Parents and the children in their care.
Most importantly, you will be making a difference in the lives of children right in your community!
